    Seed Priming/chitting ?

    Seems to be many methods for this

    What is your method and are there different methods for different veg

    I have heard though coriander seeds dont need priming

      This is another unnecessary complication for you. Just sow them in the soil in your garden, or in potting compost in containers. If you want to treat them specially nice you can buy seed compost to start them in instead of multipurpose. For sowing indoors a propagator tray with a clear plastic lid is a good idea, or you can use plastic bags or cut down plastic bottles over the containers to create the same effect.

                  Looks like a technique used in agriculture, not for back gardens!

                  I have no idea where you come up with these ideas, but, honestly, you'd do much better reading a basic gardening book and listening to all the advice you're being freely given on here by people who actually grow vegetables!

                      I don't think any seeds need priming. I suspect farmers would buy primed seeds so that everything germinated quickly and at the same time which makes it easier to get the seeds going and you can harvest at the same time. If you've got a small allotment you don't want everything to harvest as the same time and you can easily control the germinating conditions by watering/fleecing or not. I think the only time I've done anything like priming a seed was pre sprouting chickpeas as Being a bit more exotic I didn't rate my chances in cold clay and some seeds that needed a long period of cold that sat in some kitchen towel in my fridge for several months before sowing.

                        I think most growers here who do pre chit seeds do it to check viability to save sowing dud seeds.......that's the reason I do it if I do it at all.

                            Ok it's time for me to jump on this band wagon!
                            Tarragon it's great you want to start growing seriously. But there's taking it seriously and there's making it bl@@dy complicated for yourself ! It seems you are doing the latter. But you're doing it very well .
                            This gardening thing is supposed to be enjoyable and fun. If you get some veggies ( or herbs ) at the end of it bonus! So chill out, relax and just start growing!
                            Yes you will make mistakes ( we all do ), learn from them ( not all of us do ).

                              In general most seeds and plants want to grow - that is what they are there for. Really the only time you need to do anything other than plant things, water when necessary and maybe feed to encourage bigger fruit etc is if you are growing something that really wants a different climate. This would include non-hardy plants like tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers etc which can't cope with frost, and things that need a specific type of soil for example blueberries need acid soil.
