  • Seed casing still attached!

    Hi
One of my aubgergine seeds has germinated but has not released the seed casing. It is now about an inch tall but the leaves are unable to open. I have tried to gently ease it off by wetting fingers but it still won't come away and I am worried I will end up pulling the seed leaves off altogether. Should I leave it and see if it comes away naturally or is there something else I should be doing?
    Thanks
    AKA Angie

That happens with loads of my seedlings.
I think it's best just to leave it and the plant will eventually fight its way out - although the true leaves may grow before the seed leaves are released.

Sometimes i help them out with my fingers, often damaging the seed leaves in the process.

I think that helping them out is unhelpful, but it's compuslive like wanting to squeeze a zit even though it would heal better without being squeezed.

Get a bit of spit on it a couple of times a day - it weakens the seedcase
Jiving on down to the beach to see the blue and the gray, seems to be all and it's rosy-it's a beautiful day!

This has happened to some of my seedlings, but they have dropped off naturally. I do know that Bren In Pots had a problem with one and she'd tell you herself, she fiddled with it and it ended up in the bin!

I just couldn't leave my seedling alone thought I'd just help it along but instead I beheaded it so Selfraising my advice is keep your hands in your pocket.

              LEAVE IT

The above is what Nicos wanted to say to Bren, but was too nice.

Tough love, but necessary. Walk away, do something round the house, make a cuppa, do some sewing [not sowing!] - anything but fiddle.

I tried to pull a seed case off my osteospermum seedling today, and ended up uprooting it

I should have just left it alone

My sunflower seedlings are about three inches high and 2 of them still have their seed cases on! I did give a little tug but decided they know best how to get it off, they need to be strong when they have to fight for sunlight in my garden
