  • Seed Bombs

Right - a little conundrum for you.

I am at the moment getting the materials together to make seed bombs at an event in September; for 50-70 kids to make and take home.

Materials; clay, compost and seeds. [for info this bit].

However, I am flummoxed as to how to get the little darlings to transport them home without ruining something or other.

It's a sustainability event; and thus I can't really use plastic bags; esp not if they have been bought specially for the event.

So, how does one transport wet seed bombs home, without the bombs disintegrating on the way? Or squishing out of whatever they get wrapped in and ruining mum's handbag or dad's trousers....

We don't have time to dry them off on the day before they take them home; as this was my initial thought....and it won't be me making them - it will be a young lady who is a presenter on Gardener's World; so I want it to be a quality event!

Erm...what about a section of eggbox? It might go a bit soggy though...

How big will these bombs be?

How about wrapping the wet bombs in newspaper.
It'd stop any pottential spillages, draw moisture out and decrease drying time, and if it gets stuck to the bombs, it'll decompose in the ground anyway.

Sounds exciting! Something recycled - painted yoghurt pots?

Those "biodegradable" caddy liners you get for the kitchen compost thingy? Ok so they are actually crap at degrading but it says it on the packet...........

If I remember correctly from a fair we went to a couple years back, a company round here makes bags from cornstarch which breaks down quite quickly. I think they make various colours or plain white. Maybe these could be cut into circles and tied with string to make decorative packages?

                    Something waxy?
                    Baking parchment?

Miss, Miss I know!! *hand up*

You can make an origami paper water bomb - that will do it! Just google paper water bomb there is all sorts on it.

The nice bit is you can have a bomb in a bomb if you see what I mean. Mind you I'm not so happy with the militaristic connotations there...

I agree with yogurt pots (or, obviously, any similar suitable recycled pot).

However, I honestly wouldn't worry overly much about mum's handbag or dad's pocket getting messed up - we're used to that
I was feeling part of the scenery
I walked right out of the machinery
My heart going boom boom boom
"Hey" he said "Grab your things
I've come to take you home."

Trouble is getting the clay bombs inside the origami ones, unless you are suggesting to ditch the clay???

I love origami bombs, used to make them all the time.

So you could do a wallpaper paste bomb instead?
