  • Seed addiction. Who else suffers?

Particularly at this time of year, I find I am suffering badly from 'seed addiction'. All the different catalogues arrive, I read them, and decide I will only order what I actually NEED and ignore the wonderful claims of the novel varieties. But I always end up ordering far too many different things that will never prove to be of use.
I have had bad experiences in the past with seeds that don't germinate, and many things which never live up to the claims made for them.
Living in France, I get both French and UK catalogues, so the situation can be doubly difficult, and now I have been surfing the Internet for more exotic things from American and Canadian websites, where having found the thing I was looking for, I just 'add on' a couple of other items to make the order worthwhile.
Although we are lucky in having a very big garden, even so I always run out of space to plant out the results, particularly in the greenhouse. Most of the more interesting exotic specimens succumb to the cold in their first winter. Each year I decide, 'never again', and intend to get only what I really need. But every winter, I end up ordering far too many different things.
Am I alone in this? What is the solution?

Don't mention seed addiction to me - I'm a member of Seed Addicts Anonymous - so I can't possibly comment.

It would be easier to ask who doesn't and would be a very much shorter list. Hand up for SA

It's what I call "having a Crayola moment", the shiny new seed packets, all wonderfully coloured and illustrated, is just the same for me as walking into an art shop and seeing all the pastels and crayons and coloured pencils and paints laid out. You have to touch, you have to buy, even if you've still got some at home. S.A.A., paid up card carrying member!

I think we are all seed addicts on here - I went into Wilcos today and bought a huge basketful of seeds. Now if only I can stop myself buying any more I will be ok..........

Absolutely - do you get a spotty rash with long term infection?
I have found that during the early hours of the morning is my most problematic time as I have health problems which mean I'm an on and off insomiac. There is not much to do at 3am except trawl the computer - so...
I know have seeds for -
                    Lemon shape and colour cucumber
Purple Brussel Sprouts - if only I had the room to grow them!
Asparagus Peas - I don't like asparagus and hubby's wee goes green but this form might be different.
Some huge kind of Russian tomato thingy - in an ideal world I could grow them big enough for stuffing - Ha!
Shimonita - ancient Japanese leeky/onion things
Munchen Bier radish - I like beer?
Brukale - because it looked pretty
Winter beetroot - Black Spanish that I have been told I can't eat the skin of
And......they only cost a couple of pounds for all of it!
Husband has decided it's either him or the seeds - can you get grow your own hubby seeds and if so do they come in a variety of colours, shapes and sizes?

If we can't get a cabbage vaiety that covers all the bases a 'hubby bush' perennial is out of the question. However, on further thought an annual would be better for variety?
