  • Saving Water

I was thinking of getting a water butt this year, all the ones I have seen are usually connected to a downpipe from the gutter. Do you have to attach them to a downpipe (mine from the roof also has the water from the bathroom going into it) or can you get them that just collect water through the top.

The grey water from the bathroom would also be fine to use assuming it is not from the toilet.

    Very eco friendly in fact.

There's no reason why you can't collect rainwater in an open topped container though. Just that much slower.. A "lid" made of gauze or similar would prevent too much debris getting into the water.

If you use envronmentally friendly soaps and shampoos, then grey bathwater shouldn't be a problem - there is another thread that covers the use of grey water but off the top of my head can't remember who started it - but it was recent.

Would this be okay even if I dont use eco friendly products as mentioned in other replies?

I would only use it on fully established plants in my garden, and definitely not on sowings, seedling or plants that have just been transplanted out.

I agree with Rat, fine for established plants, shrubs etc.

In the drought of 1976 my parents used all the grey water from our baths on their large garden and it wored a treat.

I think the solution for me as I want to use the water to help water my veggies is to get a water butt and put it where it can collect rainwater through the top and get myself some water saving gel/crystals for the pots I am growing my veggies in.
