  • Runner beans upwigwam and garlic

Do you think it would work well if I grew runner beans up a wigwam in a raised bed that's already got garlic growing in it that was planted in November?
The garlic is doing well but I wondered if the beans would be too far advanced and plunge the garlic into shade before they're harvested in July?
Or do you think it would be ok?

I would give it a go if you have enough space between the garlic to plant the runner beans.

If you don't have anywhere else to plant your beans I'd go for it.

There's quite a few sites that say you shouldn't plant alliums with legumes because they don't do well together.

I assume that this is because of the antibacterial properties of the alliums interfering with the nitrogen fixing bacteria on the beans but if you have enough nitrogen in the bed that shouldn't be a problem as the beans will just use the free nitrogen.

I grew garlic and runner and climbing french beans together a couple of years ago just fine.

What side of the bed is the garlic on?

So is it planted on the north half or south half?
