  • Runner beans, doing a wee trial

How fast would you reckon runner beans grow, I have a number of plants that have been hardened off and ready for planting, I know it is far too early for them to go out but think I will do a trial with them, I have a row of cains in the ground for them so I will put 4 or 5 plants in the ground and protect them with a tent made of 30g. fleece, the fleece is a meter wide, will this give me enough protection for 3 or 4 weeks growth, or do you think I would need to double the hight?
it may be a struggle to reach the top, but once your over the hill your problems start.

If they were mine I'd do the single height protection now - then see what the weather looks like being in 3 weeks time.

Doing a wee trial - remember you shouldn't give them too much nitrogen.

That was my thought too - at rary's age you'd think he'd know how to wee.

Although I hear that with age it's the rembering to stop that's the problem.

Well the trial with the runner beans failed, so next year I will wait till middle of May before sowing the beans, this year the over night temperatures was too cold for them and lost some to slugs, but then if you don't try you never know

Next year, try growing Climbing French beans instead - they're less demanding than runners.
