    im going to start my shallots and onions off in loo rolls this weekend is this advisable

    They won't need that much space HW. I usually start my shallots in 15 or 24 cell trays depending how big they are.

    I'm going to do my onions this weekend as well but thats more to do with the fact I've got a shi ...er shed load of work to do up the lottie before I'll be able to plant.

      I agree with Nick, I use loo roll inners for deep rooted seeds such as beans and peas. I start my onion and shallot sets off in ordinary cell trays. Mine are shooting and ready to go to the lottie as soon as I get a good time (no work, and good weather) meantime they are quite happy in the cold greenhouse.

        I plant my shallot and onion sets direct into the ground - have never started them off in anything - I think they are pretty hardy. Although I must confess to growing EVERYTHING else from seed in cells and planting out when established.

          they have gone in the ground today 18 shallots and 50 onions. they are sat under my super cloche

            Just put mine in cells for the first time to get them started off
