  • Recommended Garlic

Hi all, can anyone recommend any varieties of garlic that have been tried and tested with success as unfortunately I lost all my garlic this year and don't want the same thing happening next year. Any advice would be welcome.

What did you plant last year? I got mine from the Garlic Farm on the Isle of Wight, about 7 different varieties. The results differed between the varieties, generally softneck did better than hardneck, but that may have been my fault. They all produced something, just some were a bit bigger than others.

What actually happened to it? Did it rot or just not grow? I'm not an expert by any stretch, but I doubt it would be the variety unless you used shop bought which might not be suited to our climate. Did your soil get water logged at all? I know it likes it fairly free draining.

My garlic didn't do great and appeared to die off in the summer but oddly enough has grown back in the autumn

This year I have bought Solent Wight (which I think is usually a fairly popular variety and it is an AGM winner), Lautrec Wight and Iberian Wight.

Robin, when you say "die back" how tall was it by that time? Mine was a couple of feet tall and started going brownish around July and that's when I harvested it.

I grew all 3 of those varieties last year. For me the Iberian did best, the Solent did OK and the Lautrec were a little on the small side, but I think that may have been my fault as Lautrec is a hardneck and I think I left the scapes on too long.

I had great success growing elephant garlic this year and the cloves are huge but not as flavoursome as my Pink Garlic for example. But still tasty I only use one clove for say a meal for 4, they are massive!!

Just about to plant my autumn Garlic along with my oninons, never done this before but have got great info from the Vines.

apparently elephant garlic is not a true garlic and is much milder in flavour. Try it roasted whole - delicious!

I took the easy method. Last October I tried a tester, and bought 1 garlic from Morrissons. I had 11 fairly similarly sized cloves, which grew, and I had an average of about 6 gloves from each garlic grow. I have eaten some, and they taste nice, pretty much similar in flavour and size from the Morrissons ones. I have retained aload this year, and have as of last weekend planted 85 garlic cloves, maybe a little overboard, but I never do things by halfs!!! So you dont need to spend lots of money from garden centres, you can use the ones from Supermarkets!! Maybe some will agree, others wont? But mine tasted well, leaves went a little brown towards the end, but all came out ok.

I'm with you mb - as an insurance policy against failure (mine went in in early Oct and are far too big) I'm going to tip out the garlic pot and anything that looks likely I'm putting in! This will be a mixture of shop bought and home saved.

With any luck it might mean you have a bumper harvest next year

I bought mine to plant from the Garlic Farm last year as I knew no better but had heard some people say that supermarket stuff may not grow as well because a lot of it comes from a different climate, for example Spain. But if the supermarket stuff works for you all well and good. This year all the stuff I've planted was stuff I harvested earlier in the year, apart from one bulb of Moldavan that I treated myself to at Winchester Farmers Market the other week.

I have had amazing success from supermarket garlic in the past, but tried cloves from the garden centre last year - they were fine, but not as good as the supermarket ones - not as plump or as numerous cloves. Maybe I was just lucky with the supermarket ....

I think the supermarket ones are the way to go, they work, they are cheap, and they get the result, so if its not broke, dont fix it!!!

I got mine last year from a greengrocer; no idea where they were originally from but I got plenty from them and the odds and ends are going back in this year for hopefully another bumper harvest next. I put plenty in as I start using it around March for green garlic - so about half of them get used well before they clove up.
