  • really thick question about spudS!

sorry, but I just have to ask this!! my earlies have been in about 6-8 weeks or so, and the lates a little bit less. so far, nothing but weeds. but in the last few days 4 little 'rosettes' of leaves are coming up, in places roughly equivalent to where the spuds were planted. they arent recognisable as the weeds coming up so far - could these be my spuds?? they are kind of darkish green, slightly hairy looking, and definite rosette formation... trouble is, I dont know what spud leaves look like!!

It certainly sounds like spuds F&VV. Just leave well alone! The stems when they grow a bit more are very fat. I would definately say they were your first potatoes!!

That's good to know as I have been panicking about being too late I am a total newbie to potatoes and have just started putting them out in gro bags and containers etc as weather has just started picking up here. Have not managed to get them all out yet as struggling for containers!!!

When I've got them out I've got a massive bag of main crop to worry about ...bought too many

Still chitting too - can't get a fork into the sodden ground unfortunately.

My earlies are in their potato barrel but there's no sign of the leaves coming through yet as I covered them with quite a few inches of compost to keep them nice & warm! Definitely sounds like yours are popping up though FVV.

My earlies have been in the bin for a good few weeks and I have added about 6inches of compost and some of the shoots are a good six inches above that.

Here is the picture from last week but they have gone even taller now.

As they are growing up more quickly on one side I have been rotating the bing but it doesn't seem to have much effect. I am only adding enough compost to keep the shortest ones about an inch above the soil.
