Personally I wouldn't sow carrot seeds outside now - there's too much of a risk of cold and snow, and I worry the seeds would rot before they germinate.
I wouldn't sow in a tray and transplant outside later either - I've not had any success with that in the past.Comment

im going to be sowing these seeds in a trough 60cm long by 25 cm wide nd 30 cm deep in new sifted compost . They will be started i propogator and under lights with a view to being moved into unheated greenhouse at later date .

They should be fine - I regularly sow carrot seeds that are more than a year old. They don't keep as long as some seeds but a couple of years is usually fine. I’d still use them, though later in the spring if I were putting them outdoors. After all, you have nothing to lose...
If they haven’t come up in a couple of months time, just put some other seeds/seedlings in the gap instead ;-)Comment
