  • Question about growing area...

Hey i will be growing a Atlantic Giant pumpkin and wondering where I could put it. I have limited ground space (which will go to a few marrow plants) and need somewhere to put the vines.

I was thinking on top of my shed (pic below):

But I would have to put the pumpkin in a grow bag I have which has a capacity of about 150-180 litres, will this be enough for 1 plant?

Another problem I have is where Im going to let it grow? Should I let it grow on the shed roof or will the vines grow down the shed and I can let the pumpkin grow on the ground?

    how will you water it?

Hehe guess im gonna have to climb up the shed every day with a ladder!
Yeh I think the back of the shed (black bit) can support the weight the plastic sheets in front definetly cannot

Atlantic Giant is a massive pumpkin: the fruit needs to be resting on something solid - like the ground - I wouldn't trust your roof, and I definitely couldn't be faffed to climb up and water it.

Hmmm would I be better off growing it on the ground (where the grow bag is atm)?
I could but then it will prob take over my whole garden?

Also do you think the grow bag is big enough?

tbh, I don't think you'll get very large fruits from a container anyway. 150 litre growbag? That's a bale!
You can contain the sprawling vine a bit by training it round in a circle: if it was in the ground you'd spiral it round itself, pegging it down with tent pegs or something

out of interest: why did you choose Atlantic Giant if you only have a patio?

Hmmm I dunno the idea of a huge pumpkin just seemed very exciting to me, the kid in me took over and I bought some seeds!

Hmmm I guess its still worth a go in the growbag? I could put it in the side area where the soil is but Im guessing I cannot plant anything else there!

If you were determined to grow it you could take out a single paving flag in the other corner, enrich the soil with the growbag stuff and let it trail along the right hand wall.

Yeah: they really do need to be in full sun. Why don't you grow lettuce instead?

I'd just let it run around the patio, it will give it a nice jungly feel
