  • Problems with parsnip germination

    Hi there,

Help!!! Am having difficulty in germinating parsnips, have tried them in guttering in the greeenhouse and also in modules in a heated propogator to no avail. Both times I used new seeds as I've heard that old seed (last years) will be difficult to germinate. Any tips would be gratefully received as they are my favourite veg. Many thanks Jill

Parsnips can take up to a month so hang in there..

Otherwise you can pregerminate seed between damp kitchen paper on a windowsill and then carefully plant them out where they are to grow or into compst filled toilet roll tubes. Make sure your soil is deep and light.

The key is never to disrupt the tap root or plant in recently manured soil - you'll get forked roots

    Hope this helps...

          Thanks for the advice.

Dobby, do you put yours in a heated propagator to germinate and do you use seed compost?

He pops them into Miracle Grow compost Jet, or into a seed compost, but hasnt put them into a heated propogator, just covered the toilet rolls with a lid, then leave well alone, germination has been pretty good, and we've planted the first batch of 20 out on the plot last Sunday, and seem to be doing fine!
