  • Preparing for onions Question

I am up for a trial. I should be able to pick 5 to 15 alliums a week an average (excludes 10 to 15 cloves/chives of garlic a week). anyone else who eat these many alliums, happy to share the plans with

This year I will be sowing onion, shallot sets, garlic, and all types of allium seeds I have. but I decided to sow in direct soil mostly.

decided to keep aside a big patch to turn it into allium field. in that areaI have grown potatos this year, and half of them got drowned in this year jun-july heavy rain. so potatos had to take new root to survive, and yeild was not any good . I dig that part now, which is not really heavy soil. very crumbly. got stuck If it would be the same por drainage conditions next year for onions.

heard I can not add any manure or nitrozen rich garden compost before planting onion sets. am waiting for council compost which is not really confirmed of availability yet.

only available mulch is straw bales, I do not think it can help any for loose soil except that keeping the weeds at bay.

do I need to dig further deep, and then plant onion sets?
