  • Potato Spacing

I brought the book 'The People's Potato' from a potato day.

In it, it mentions 'Space earlies at intervals of 6 inches apart in the row, and the rows 24 inches apart. For second earlies and main crop, plant spaced at intervals of 12 inches in rows 36 inches apart.'

Does anyone have any experience in setting them this close together?

They are closer than that in buckets (3 to a 30 litre bucket).

I haven’t tried them as close as your book suggests -yet. It just goes to show there are as many ways of gardening as gardeners... I think earlies were about 15” apart, maincrops 2’ on my plot last year

If you have lots of space, you could have a look at a few different reference sources, and try them all out. That way, you can compare your yields on each version of planting distances, and next year you will know what spacing works best on your plot ;-)

I have a given length of plot, I lay my seed tatties on the ground and space them evenly, I then plant them, I always do that and have never ever taken a tape measure anywhere near my veg plot.

I remember my dad making furrows in the soil and we'd put a foot onto the furrow, drop a spud at the toes, next foot, drop another etc.
          Works for me

I plant my earlies a foot apart and rows a foot apart. Used to space em further apart but closed the spaces and not noticed any drop in yeild.
