  • Please help with Potatoe variety?

I have grown Arran Pilot , first earlies ,for years and they are always delicious. But I find that I'm always a week too late starting digging them , my fault, and by the time I get to the end of them they are past being at their best, too big and not as yummy. I only grow a small bag full from Wilkos.

In Wilkos last week a guy looking at the seed potatoes told me I should try second earlies, (pentland javlin )they taste just as good and don't spoil as quick if not dug up.

What do you Tatie experts reckon?
    Thank you

I grow Pentland Javelins, They are listed as first earlies, they're just not as early as some others

If you leave them long enough they can get to baking size

I like Charlotte's they're a waxy second early that if left in the ground still taste good.

Last year grew Arron Pilot early and Charlotte second early, doing same this year as B&Q had them in and the devil you know........... Would agree with Bren in pots that the charlotte hold thier flavour , and like you found the Arron Pilot dont when older but we then used them for chips. Not tried pentland javelin to comment, but would have if b&q had done smaller bags or a local reading this wants to exchange some
