  • Pleasant suprise.

I grow Kestrels in containers and lavish great care and attention on them. For the last few days, one of the containers has been looking decidedly poorly whern compared with the others. Not blight, just droopy foliage. So, I gave them some extra water with a bit of tommy feed and some epsom salts added to see if that pulled them round. It didn't seem to do any good, so I thought it might br slugs, snails or suchlike in the soil, and decided to pull one up to see what was what. Even after the extra watering the soil was still quite dry, but I got some really nice spuds off it! Lovely condition. A bit small, but no sign of any unwanted attention been given by anything. There were lots of smaller ones left on the plant, so being a tight sod, I replanted it. They have been in just 13 weeks. They will be surrounded by hot chip fat in about 3 hours time. Can't understand the wilting though.

Nice looking potatoes. I've some ready to lift, hopefully over the weekend.

They made awesome chips! My old mother had a bit of trouble chomping them as they stay much more solid than bought offerings. Still enough left from this pulling to do us at least another dinner each. Took hardly any scraping at all. They could really do with another couple of months growing to be at their best and most productive. I often think they would be better treated as maincrop rather than second earlies.

They're fine as long as they have plenty of light and food....

You should be reported to the RSPCP
Feed the soil, not the plants.
