  • Plants in Memorium

Does anyone else have anything they grow as a memorial of people or things they would like to remember.

I have Oriental Poppy, one has just opened this week, to remember a lady called Murial who I knew when I was 10-11yo. She was a big influence on me and she grew them in her front garden. I still think of her fondly, 35 years on.
I also have Flanders Poppy, also just opened today, in memory of my dad's brother Eric who died in WW2 and whom I am named after. (and all the other men and women of WW2),
Salad Burnett as this is a family name from the past.
Nasturtiums, which was given to my daughter (and the rest of her classmates) by her form teacher, when they finished their year with her.
Daffodils by which I remember an old colleague, who meant a lot to me.
    Rhubarb, which my nan grew.
A shrub the name of which I don't know, which was given to my girls by their child-minder, when they finished going to her.

Sweet peas to put on my sister's grave. The one thing she looked forward to was crops from my lottie, sadly she died one month after I got my plot, so I grow sweetpeas for her. Roses as my dad loved them, we had loads when I was little, swwet williams for my mum, she had no sense of smell but loved them.

I grow lots of my late OH's favourites - Iceberg roses, snowdrops, Tete a tete narcissi and white lilies to name a few. And spuds!
I drew the line at sprouts though - he loved them and I don't.

At a friend's funeral several years back (in September) we were all given a handful of daffodil bulbs. When they come up we always think of her. Lovely idea.

When my Mum past away my Dad planted a Magnolia in the front garden of our old house...it's still there and is over 20 years old now, it looks magnificent when it's in full flower.
I also grow white hyacinths, they were one of mum's favorite flowers also lavender in memory of here.
All my veg in memory of my Granddad (mum'd Dad), I never really got to know him he died when I was only small about 2/3 year old, but I can always remember this man who brought lot's of dirty potatoes...apparently that was my Granddad . He grew competition chrysanthemum's on his allotment, I have some of his medals that he won in a frame.
My herb garden was strongly influenced by one of my old school teachers Mr's Crosley sadly no longer with us, she always brought herbs in to class for us to smell and taste she also showed me how to take cutting's of rosemary.
Narcissi in memory of a friend who died from breast cancer in what seams like a life time ago at the very young age of 23 years old...and who I miss so much.

This is a lovely thread...I'm sat here with fond memory's of much loved people...Thank's WW. xx

My granny was called Violet and every house I've ever lived in in England or France has had a mass of violets in the garden. Hello Granny! I can't smell a rose without thinking of Mum. She was a genius at roses and the house smelled wonderful in the summer.

It is the wrong time of year to get the bulbs I'm afraid, Coreopsis. You can certainly find some lovely bulbs in the spring. Your only other option is to buy a pot of them ready to flower, and plunge these into the garden.

I have quite a collection of hellebores that I've planted. My mother adored them, and as an avid gardener she always hoped she would get seedlings from them , but to her great disappointment, she never did. My hellebores have hundreds of babies each year - I like to think she has a hand in that. So whilst they aren't planted in her memory as such, they always make me think of her.

Oh, Coreopsis - I did a quick google search for Madonna lilies (lilium regale) and when the spring 2011 catalogue opens these people seem to offer them by mail order.

Flobalob what a lovely thing to grow purple flowers for her - I love that. My favourite sweet rocket flowers are the pale purple ones.
