pesky peas!!

    pesky peas!!

    Planted out next to canes. have they grown up the things? no they flippin' well haven't! up each other, along the ground, but not up the canes! I assume I'll have to tie them up tonight.

    any hints/tips on how to persuade them?

    Least you have peas.

    I was thinking mine were taking a long time to germinate. Found a shall pile of pea skins. Mice!!


    I use Square stock fencing - 2.4m long. Pull them through the bottom square and the find their own way.

      Use some twine which is on the hairy side, if you have some, roughly horizontally between the canes - no need to tie it just loop it round each and criss-cross over where the peas are, at different heights - if you leave it as a continuous piece and are mean like me, you can roll it up again and re-use it later in the year - bamboo is good for making frames with, and OK for runners to twirl around, but its a bit slippery for pea tendrils.

        Mike peas don't grow twisting around canes like beans do, they need netting or twigs to cling to.

          I've not grown much in terms of peas, other than pea shoots, but I didn't know that. Learnt something new. Thank you!

            Got a roll of wire mesh 4 feet high off fleaBay. Not the best quality but it does the job. Cut some holes to poke stakes through and made a long horseshoe shape with an opening at one end. So in effect, as the lottie is 20ft wide, I'm growing two 20ft rows. The mesh is ¾inch size so a few peas poke their heads through, but you can sometimes poke them back inside. More importantly, pigeons can't get at them! Long piece of net over the top fixed with bulldog clips, all sorted.

            Had a great harvest last year, must have frozen 4 carrier bags with peas, but they were gone in about 3 months. Must have to grow one hell of a lot of peas to last the year, but they were lovely.

              well, I made with the hairy string last night - fingers crossed.

              I think I'll go for some mesh next year - will they grow up chicken wire? got a fair bit of that about

                  should do the trick - forgot to say, but for anyone-else in the same boat some knitting wool is another alternative to string, if you have an unused ball somewhere.
