The packet says "Pisello Rampicante Telefono" but my Solvakian is a tad rusty.

Looks like you might need to wait until spring to plant them.

I grew some rampicante beans from Italy this year and expected them to be quite rampant by there name!

How wrong I was!! They were sickly looking and I even wrapped the wigwam I was growing them on in polythene to try and emulate the Italian climate.

All to no avail they grew to 4'0" high and just fizzled away!

Total and utter waste of time, not to be repeated!

Thanks for the help guys. Not looking too promising but I will put them in next year and hope for the best. New to all this allotment stuff but I guess its mostly trial and error for the first few years anyway. One think that puzzles me though, if they are from Italy why are my bloody intsructions in Slovakian? Oh well hey ho!

Pisello Rampicante Telefono - I guess , looking through google, is a climbing pea called Telephone or telegraph so what you found is as good as I could as well Bex.

That's the beauty of the European Market monkeybum. I presume they were purchase in northern italy, so a quick look at the map may explain. They were probably imported cheaply as happens here occasionally where you buy something in Lidl or Aldi and have to hunt for the english instructions. Fortunately when I have seeds bought in Italy the instructions are in Italy which I can just about manage.

Must be that French A level I took all those years ago!!

More peas

As this thread is discussing peas. I wondered if I could ask a question?
I have read the GYO mag for October and am interested in overwintering peas. I have just gone out and purchased a small polytunnel and so am all set to plant seeds on my windowsill to later put into the ground overwinter so I can have peas in May ( according to the article) However.... could someone please confirm that I have this right. I have been warming the ground. I shall plant three seeds per coir pot. I should put the shooting seeds into my plastic greenhouse thingy in the day and bring them in at night. When do I put them into the ground, under the polytunnel?
I am sorry but this is the first time I have tried to grow something for a real result and not just bunged a few seeds in and crossed my fingers.
Could someone let me know if I have it all wrong. I am planning on planting
Meteor or Feltham first as these were suggested in the article.

Can't comment on Meteor but my dad grew Feltham first. They aren't as sweet as the maincrop ones but you can always slip a bit of sugar in when you cook them

As you are doing it properly sods law says they'll fail !! but we'll assume not shall we. If your plastic greenhouse is unheated you shouldn't have a problem as they will be sitting under the cloche/tunnel full time. so as soon as you feel they are OK (4" tall or there abouts) you can plant them out & then cover them back over to keep them warm over winter.

I have some Feltham First in modules in the growhouse. Alongside my Bunyards Exhibition and Red Epicure broad beans. They will be going outside when they are an appropriate size.

NTG it that a male or female 4 inches?
