What do parsnip seedlings look like? I sowed mine in loo rolls a week ago. Something has come through in one but it looks like a grass seedling to me!

Grass is a monocote....has one seed leaf to start with and looks like a very small piece of grass.
Parsnips are diocotes...and have two leaves (seed leaves) to start with. look a little like mustard, as in the mustard and cress you get in an egg sarnie

congratulations headfry,i am on the third lot ,{the other two must have been kept by the devil}and today 3 are just starting into life,i know its not many but i live in hope,it's barley a week since i started them of,they are avon resister,on damp kitchen roll,inside a poly bag ,near a window and a radiator,i put a paper on the top to darken them a couple of days ago,i will have to try another lot just to find out if it is a fluke,this time will try some inside black polythene bag,see what happens

Parsnip leaves are very distinctive.........a bit like parsley in looks, which is understandable, as they are a close relative!

Well done you Headfry, that's 13 days to germination and in a heated propagator. I shall have to see if mine are behaving after 12 days of pre-germination.

Note-- about parsnip seedlings, the seed leaves will end up more pointy as they unfurl
the first of the true leaves will look like the back of your hand with the fingers curled under!
does that many any sense at all? they are quite a bright green too !

Quite right headfry *Gives himself slap on back of hand for forgetting about the seed leaves!(cotyledons?)*

Does this help? They havent got the first true parsley like leaves yet, but shows you that they can't be mistaken for grass-like seedlings.

fantastic snips hazel mine are up now and potted in me rolls, mine were 15days to germination on damp paper in a sealed take away container, much more succesful than last years attempt. you can only thank the info of the vine for that. it sometime pays to look and read al the tips from the old heads on here cheers grapes.

Mine are up too

Pre-germinated seed (took 7 days to germinate) planted in 2/3 of a kitchen roll tube on 10th March and put outside in a plastic greenhouse thing were up on 20th.

Think that the parsley has gone to the devil though

mine are up were planted outside just before the cold spell in feb , they are now coming through.
