  • Overwintered Spring Onions

I've just replanted my overwintered spring onions (Lisbon) as they're chives-like thin. They were crammed together very tightly in a pot but now they're spaced out by half to 1 inch. I don't know if this is the right thing to do, I sunk the bulbs about an inch or so deeper from the roots up, won't hurt, would it?

I may ditch the spring onions as not worthwhile veg for the effort unless someone know of a tried & tested method of growing effectively in a window box with decent quality crop (fat enough to bite ) for a long period of harvesting as I like to snip them off like chives. Am I asking for too much miracle here? BTW no can do in bed, bed space's too precious. Thanks.

Just make sure you don't sink them too much. If the soil is too wet it will encourage them to rot.

And when your back stops aching,
And your hands begin to harden.
You will find yourself a partner,
In the glory of the garden.

Started off my overwintering spring onions in cell trays (six or seven seeds to a small cell) and planted them on the lottie - just planted the whole cell. They were doing OK, but it's been too wet to check for the last couple of weeks. I've never been able to grow the summer ones to a decent size, but if I have space I will keep trying.

        Hi
Due to do mine in a few weeks, would have done them this weekend but it started raining [yes, sometimes I am a wimp]. Onions - I am obsessed by them and if I ever find a fail-safe method without too much faffing about I'll post it here. When I use the Piglet method they never push themselves apart enough - although I will probably try again this year.
