    Onions or Leeks

    Hi
    Every year I say I'll label absolutely every plant but no...
    Had trays of leek seedlings and trays of onion seedlings, then I got mice in the greenhouse and coldframe and trying to move all my pots under propagator lids to keep them safe - well, they got mixed up.

    So, today I thought I was planting leeks but some of them might well be onions. Have done the usual deep dibber hole and puddled them in - my question is if some are onions will they still grow OK or will they be planted too deep?

    Well, at least it will add some excitement to my allotment visits as I breathlessly wait to find out what they are!

    sue,if you pinch a bit of the plant between your fingers,and smell it,they smell differently,and i believe that onions leaves look narrower and rounder,and leeks are thicker,wider and flat,hope you can understand what i mean,on another thread someone suggests a toy snake keeps the mice away,no not having a laugh.

      Leek foliage is flat, onion leaves(flags) are round and hollow! Leeks are more upright as well!

        thats a better way of putting it ,but didn't know that leeks were of the flag family,as i have always thought of flags as flowers,thinking about it the leaf arrangements are the same,is that why,we live and learn.

          Thanks for your descriptions - some of them are def onions, will they be OK at the depth I've planted them, dibbed and puddled in, thought onions were more shallow planted. Not done onions from seed before, only ever had sets so a bit in the dark over this.
