  • Onion sets- when should bulbs swell?

    Hi,
I'm growing onions for the 1st time and the sets I planted in March have not swollen at the base yet. I also grew some overwintering onions from seeds planted in Sept last year and these are swelling up nicely.

Do spring planted sets swell later? I fear that I might have planted the sets to deep, if thats the case I'll eat them now as spring onions.

I suspect and hope somebody can confirm that I just need to wait a bit longer.

Spring planted sets and seeds don't swell or mature until late summer. These are the sort of onions you can either use fresh or store overwinter. Autumn planted sets are maturing or bulbing about now,and you can use them as soon as they're big enough. However, they don't store well.

This is my first year having autumn sown sets, and they are now at a stage that I am starting to use them (nicely swelled). However, both of my areas of spring sown sets are plenty green but showing no signs of bulbing up yet. I am not expecting to start using these until the autumn ones are gone, as these are the ones that I was able to save well last summer and I have the last 4 still in the kitchen to finish off - hence starting to harvest this years as well!!
