  • onion seedlings ok?????

Here are a couple of pics of my kelsae seedlings.

A couple of them are producing their fourth leaf. And THey look pretty good I guess...

I have noticed that several of them have got yellow ends on the very tips of the leaves, however, this is not the seed leaf (I posted about something similar a few weeks ago)!!!!!

I snipped the yellow bits off on some of them.

    Question is, is this 'normal'?

I have seen lots of photos of onion seedlings on google etc... and to be fair, they all look quite scraggy!!!

    What do you think????

nice strong plants. Maybe give them a fortnightly feed of liquid seaweed once a fortnight to perk them up if you think they need it. A capful to a couple of litres of water should be ample

Would a fortnightly feed be "too weak"?

Silly question, but what are the bits of wire for? I am curious as I am growing onions myself this year from seed

#7 The wire is to support the leaves as the plant grows. Other wise the leaves will fall over and disrupt the grow cycle.

                  repot onions???

A few weeks ago I posted that I was a bit concerned about my kelsae onions.

Now however, I am not sure what to do with them, as they are almost pencil thick, and around 9 inches tall, not including the 4 inch pots.

I have had them happily under lights for several weeks. But soon they wont fit, and I guess I need to make room for the chillies to go under there anyway

                  My questions are:

Should I think about potting these on into 6 inch pots soon? As the roots are sticking out the bottoms of the pots.

And will they be quite happy on windowsills in the house, until planting out time?

                  Any advice welcomed....

Please excuse the state of my table!!!!!!!

                          Duly spotted.

Onions seem to thrive best when their roots are quite tight in the pot. Knock one out of its pot to have a looksee. In fact take a photo and post it here. I will be watching and give my tuppence worth. Whatever, I would only pot them into the next pot size up.

                          They are looking brilliant though.

there is an empty beer bottle on the table!!!!!

Ok AP, well I would say that the roots are not 'tight' in the pot at all.

Just that they are poking out of the bottom!

Glad to hear they are doing well though.

I will give it a little longer, then I will knock one out of the pot and take a photo, and place on this thread.

                              What about the windowsill situation?

I assume they will be ok on the windowsill in their existing pots????
