  • Odessa summer squash

    Hello all,

Have you grow it before ? I know it is a vine type but other than that I have no idea .
I am wondering how long will the vine sprawl , how many days does it need to mature and does it taste nice ?

I am currently running out of space, careful planning became crucial in order to fit in most things . I am relying on your info grapes.
    Happy Easter !!!

    Many thanks in advance .

    cant help much

I cant help much as I have never really grown anything before let alone squash but have got some seeds of some squash I am hoping to grow so will keep my eyes on this thread. Have read that they are very hungry feeders and grow at a good old pace as well!

I grew them for the first time last year - all I can tell you is that they really don't like being under a foot of water for a week.
Into each life some rain must fall........but this is getting ridiculous.

Many thanks for the input grapes . Sorry to hear that Bluemoon, are you growing Odessa this year ? I plan to grow 2 vine (but if it is rampant, it will only be 1 vine).
Keep me updated, Bluemoon. It will be nice to share experience about odessa .

Mrs Baggins, thanks for confirming, yes all squashes are hungry feeder and I don't want to set them in a crowded bed . I have grown several types both winter and summer squashes and has pretty good harvest too. What squash are you growing ?

If space is so tight, remember there's always next year for this Odessa . Just try the Straightneck/Crookneck and the white Lebanese, surely interesting as they are from your common courgettes. Don't tell me you're still looking for more seeds! Think I've stopped but will probably start seed searching from Sep onwards for next year .

I have sweet dumpling which are quite small and my son bought jumbo pink banana!! may just grow a couple of each and see what happens. No idea how many fruit I might get off them each but even its its 2 or 3 I will be happy as theres only me to eat them. Luckily the plot next to my lottie is vacant so may trail my stems that way!

am not going to start mine yet though as they take off quickly and its no good srating them early as i have no where to put them

I haven't grow sweet dumpling nor pink banana but I think both of them are rampant (If I am not mistaken). Have you mix in some manure in the future growing site ? They will truly enjoy it . If you don't have indoor space for them, wait till early may (depending on your local last frost date), by then you can direct sow them but watch out for the slugs!! Good luck with your winter squashes .
