  • NZ yams?

I have just noticed that T&M are selling New Zealand Yams, has anyone tried these? and if so, are they worth it?

I grew them last year. I liked them, trick is not to over cook them though- or you loose the lemony flavour.

I had mine from a member here - though realseeds also sell a few different types of them as well. If you search for 'oca' here (via a google search possibly if oca is too short) you'll find more threads on them.

BM, when you first said about growing Orcas I thought you meant Ocas, not Okras
I have some to grow this year - tried once before but didn't have much of a crop.

If I have to explain it , it ceases to be a tangentalisation

Did you say something BigM? I seem to have an orach in my ear
Sweet potatoes - planted them in pots, they died off and are still sitting in the GH. However, on the windowsill there are a couple of dark red Sweetpots with teeny shoots......and I have some Yacon in pots too. Red, yellow and pink Oca awaiting its turn

I grew oca (generous lottie neighbour shared some of her real seeds tubers). They didn't give a huge crop and were quite small so maybe I dug them up a bit early (had to do it before 37 weeks pregnant!). They are certainly pretty plants and the tubers were nice cooked (I steamed them). I kept all the little ones for seed tubers and am hoping to seed swap some.

James Wong is making a case for them in his book - so I suspect their popularity may be on the up...
Not much time and not much money, but trying to figure out a better way to grow my own by gathering allotment tips, and writing an allotment blog about using them.

My oca is sitting on the windowsill in an egg box chitting, bought them on e-bay .Have never tried eating it but looking at the price of seed tubers I could easily finance my allotment for the year reselling the harvest if I don't like it.
the size of tubers apparently increases for a couple of weeks after the foliage dies down from first frost so harvesting is best left as late as possible, could be the reason for your reduced crop salome
