  • No spray Sarpo potato research - needs fund raising help! 15 days to go.

    Hi all,

I'm not sure if you've come across this recently, but folk doing research on blight free potatoes are looking to raise funds to bring a new variety to market. Some £6,230 has already been raised, but they are still looking for the remaining £3,770 as I write this - with 15 days to go.

It's key research - and timely - given the year full of blight we have had - but they can't get grant funding for as it's so close to market. You can donate from £10 upwards - and even participate in testing the new variety.

I've donated already, but here's the blurb in their own words for those who might also consider pitching in:

Our no-spray potato can feed the world – with your help
We have a promising new seedling (let’s call it Crow, short for Crowdfunded for now) to extend our Sarpo range. We need to test Crow’s performance against standard varieties in the field/garden and in the kitchen. Then we can send seed of Crow for government testing (very expensive) over two growing seasons. If the regulators agree that Crow would make a useful new variety, they will award it National List status. Then the variety can make a big contribution to really sustainable food production in UK and abroad. We need £10,000 to help us do this.

We can’t get grant funding for this kind of work because is thought to be near market research and therefore a private matter. Breeders of GM resistant potatoes do get grant support! So, if you join us by donating funds, time or skills, it can make all the difference.

As a backer, you can participate in our research by testing Crow and sending us your results.

Just an update on this project. there are now only 5 days to go and supporters have offered £8,060 towards the £10.000 needed. Still nearly £2000 needed for a new sort of blight free potato to be tested. If you've had a bad year with blight, consider whether you can support this research.

Just to let you know that the project has achieved its target funding of £10,000 with hours to spare. The research will continue!
