No Carrot Germination

ive had a terrible time with carrots. I think its mainly down to my laziness tho. The weeds took over the first time and the second sowing, half didnt germinate.

Sorry to be the opposite, but last year I sowed 4 rows of carrots and none came up.. this year, by luck or judgement, I sowed one row and they all came up, as did the beetroot.. we did have a very wet April down here, and the soil was pretty moist and the weather humid, maybe that helped.. Next year will probably be the opposite..
They seem to like warm moist earth for a few weeks until they get started..Was going to give up this year if they didn't show ( carrots that is)

|My carrots germinated fine despite the rain we had in May. I thought the seeds would have been washed away but they're standing there in little rows . The ones I planted earlier in a bread basket are looking great and hopefully coming up to eating size.

Same problem here, Just two seed germinated. I did however sow the small variety Parmex in a deep container in the greenhouse and got a great crop of carrots.

here in bedfordshire I planted four twelve foot rows and got a total of 21 carrots and no idea what i did wrong

Hello Bramble, yes Parmex was the ones I sowed in the bread baskets and they're looking great but not eating size yet, but not far off. The ones I sowed outside were Early Nantes and germination was good and growing well. Very pleased as i've never grown carrots before. However, they've yet to hit the plate ! Will let you all know how that goes.

Hallo Alice, maybe if its not too late i will sow some more and try my luck again. I just love the little Parmex but would also like to make a success of sowing some (real) big carrots outdoors.

Same here Im now on my 4th sowing and have only got a few scattered plants from the previous 3. Could it be that the seed is poor this year, as Ive never had a problem before.

I've never grown carots before, but had loads of Early Nantes free with magazines. I sowed two rows in the polytunnel and one row have just shot up and the row is very full, yet the row beside it is very patcy and part of the row hasn't grown at all. Breaks my heart thinning the good row and throwing them away when the row next to it is so poor. I sowed some outside and these are coming up, but again quite patchy.

Perhaps they are just very temperamental?

I am in my second year of fruit and veg growing, but was surprised how badly my carrots did this year, given that the year before I just chucked them in some ground that had been used in the past for veggies but not had and care for years and got quite a few carrots back.
This year I carefully laid the seeds in ground which had been dug and manured but several sowing over 4-6 weeks only yielded 2 or 3 plants after 2 months.
However I sowed some seeds a couple of weeks ago on the same ground and I now have a jolly row of seedlings coming up.
Is it something weather related as I used the same seeds in the same ground with completely diferent results?

You shouldn't really maure the ground for Carrots, there is normally enough in the ground from the previous crops in the rotation. I've ahd the same trouble this year Lazzaw, I htink what it was , was the long spell of cold dull rainy weather we had. The ground was really cold & it stopped things. I had the same problem earlir on with my Dahlia's. I could take millions of cuttings now, but when I wanted them they were as rare as rocking horse droppings !

i sowed some tricolour f1 in milk cartons. the cardboard ones you know. i just cut the tops off, put a couple of holes in the bottom as i was away. theyv grown really well. there isnt really space in each one for more than 3 carrots but ive been pulling them up as mini carrots occasionaly. i sowed some outside and quite a few have come up although the ground wasnt cultivated enough and has hardened like a crust around them so whether il get any carrots i dont know. just sown the last of the packet and some purple haze in some properly dug ground so fingers crossed

I'm growing some Nantes in buckets and about 3/4 of the seedlings seem to have survived. Think it's beginner's luck though. I didn't use manure either as I'm sure I'd read somewhere else on the vine that they don't like it.
