    New Things To Try So Opinions Please

    Looking through 1 of the 4 seed cats that turned up since yesterday I have spotted a few bits and bobs that might just fit into our tiny garden.

    I have not tried any of these in the past so wondered what you lot thought.

    Potato - Purple Majesty
    Courgeet - Shooting Star (a climber)
    DFB - Yin Yang
    Wasabi Spinach

    p.s Yes I know my spelling is terrible.

    I don't think there are any decent climbing courgettes. I tried black forest and summin else many moons ago and I seem to feel like often read peeps having the same non-eventful experiences.

    Yin-yang beans are ok but don't bother if they are pricey. In fact I will check if I have some fresh seed and I will pop some in the post if you pm your address.

    Don't know about the others.

      I grew purple majesty a couple of years ago. They were okay although a bit difficult to spot if grown in the ground. They tend to look a slightly unappealing grey colour when mashed.

      And I remember seeing something about eating blue/purple foods rich in anthocyanins which only give a temporary boost to the body's antioxidant levels then depress the body's own natural antioxidant production so overall they don't do you any favours.

          I thought Tromboncino was supposed to be ok as a climbing courgette/summer squash

            Yep, trombocinni is a climber. Mr Bee got it to climb nicely and we had lots and lots and lots which was a bit of a pain as I didn't like them much. I found them pretty tasteless.

            Luckily my neighbour liked them so most went to her or in the piccalilli.

            I have got some yellow courgette seeds that are supposed to be climbers for this year, but we will wait and see.

              Agree with spamvindaloo on the Purple Majesties. Low visual appeal (blue when baked or as chips but a weird greyish colour when cooked any other way). Taste nothing special. Lots of better potatoes available. Just in case you're looking at other unusual varieties, I also tried Red Emmalie last year. Won't bother again. Colour a washed-out pink, which could have been worse, but nobody liked the flavour that much. Waste of ground and water!

                  They stay rich red if they are parboiled then roasted. Himself likes them, I agree with you though, so we're not having them again!

                    give salad blue a try, great taste as chips, roasties, a solid blue, great, but I find blue mash odd, even though I grew them myself, but whatever way you use them they taste lovely.. highland burgundy, a good taste, if peeled with one of those parers you get a white tattie on the outside about 1/4ins thick with a red core, great for chips and roasties but boiled they go very mushy so not so good, but they make very odd looking fish and chips or roast dinners..

                      Sounds like you had better luck with yours than I did. Mine were a great colour when very small and I had high hopes, but once they'd reached even small egg size, the colour had dissipated.

                        I don't think I did, except on the colour front - nearly every single one had some kind of hole in it. Even though the Charlottes were just next to them, they were completely untouched. Massive wastage.
