  • New Poll!

    Hi Grapes,

Now that the summer will be coming to an end, we would like to know if you are taking a break from working on your allotment. If not, please tell us how often you are planning to use your plot and what you will be growing. Share your plans with us for our November poll.

    Thanks very much!

I use it slightly less as I can't get there in the week as it's dark in the evenings after work but there isn't an option for that. I NEVER take a break from it though as winter is a good time to catch up with loads of maintenance jobs and I still need to go there to harvest winter veggies too even when it's too cold for anything to grow.

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

Very rarely for me. After work isn't an option as it's dark. No shed/greenhouse means it's difficult to store/start stuff off, and weekends are at the mercy of the weather.

Does give the opportunity like Alison says to get some maintenance work done though.

Ebony, I think the second option on the poll should read "Less frequently than summer", after all we're hardly likely to visit more often in winter.

The poll doesn't seem to have enough options as the answer from me would definitely be "less often" as the weeds slow down and you don't need to water! There's less to harvest so will probably only be seen on plot fetching some greens for sunday lunch!

Ebony, I agree with Rustylady in that I use it but less so for only overwintering veg. Other beds are winter prepped ready for Spring so it becomes a maintenance/feed the soil issue. Time to spread muck and compost on the beds to mulch down. The soil needs a period of rest and Winter provides that holiday for both the allotment and myself to a degree.

Yes, i agree.. We visit less than in summer, so cant vote. As me and my mate are morning people we tend to become more choosy on the timing of our visits. I still go at least once a week, if only to dig sprouts out of the snow drifts and leeks from the permafrost. But we still visit and sup tea and make the world a better place on a nice days and tidy up (hahahaha, if you believe that you are one on your own).
Got some raised beds to build this autumn and improve my water collecting system.

I would also be a less frequent visitor, although I don't completely take a break. Depends on the weather and as others have said after work becomes impossible as it's too dark. ( depressing thought) Visits tend to be shorter too. Plenty of preparation with a seed catalogue and a cup of tea. Does sorting seed packets into different piles count as gardening?

less often and usually with a hammer in hand for mending and transforming pallets! None of the poll options apply to me either
