    Name that spud...

    Hello!
    On holiday my garden notebook went missing. So i don't know what i planted

    It's probably
    Sharpe's express
    Charlotte
    Pink fir
    Desree (i think)
    Possibly some other wildcard maincrops

    But i don't know which bed...

    Eeek!
    Anything i can do other than just pull them as they mature? I suppose i could unearth a surface potato and see. How long do spuds to take their characteristics?

    My problem is I don't write anything down and I have a row that I have no idea what they are lol.

      A few years ago there was a thread on here about potato flowers with photos, but it was probably before all the photos got lost. These are 2 photos I took for that thread:

      I don't know how true to reality the colours are.

      Red skinned potato varieties have reddish stems, white skinned ones tend to have green stems, so your Desiree and Pink Fir Apple should look different to Charlotte and Sharpe's Express. Desiree tends to produce a lot of fruits that look like little tomatoes (don't eat them - they are poisonous!) so that might help you a bit. Otherwise scraping the soil away near the surface to look won't hurt - you should easily identify Pink Fir Apple and Charlotte is a quite distinctive long oval shape which should help.

          iv'e 7 rows growing and the only one i'm certain about is the Pink Fir Apple !LOL. atb Dal

            Did you plant them in rows of the same type or put them all in a bucket and pull one out at random as I would have done?
            It doesn't really matter what they are, just dig up a plant when it looks ready.

                    You could bookmark the AHDB website, Varieties then you'll always have it - until you forget where your computer is!!

                      Reminds me of the year my toddler niece was "inspecting" my trays of chitting potatoes and reorganised them all by size! We didn't think she'd swapped many around but when the potatoes flowered we had a pretty pattern of white and purple flowers. They all got eaten.
                      Aforementioned toddler is now at university but still finds time to visit at the beginning of July when the cherries are ready.

                              Me, I plant mine out in alphabetical order. So long as I remember the varieties (not always a given), that's me sorted.
