I've been looking at the inocculated logs for a while now but never did buy one. Took my Mum to the pound shop the other day and they had wee mushroom growing kits so I bought 2 and planted them up tonight

Has anyone tried these, is there another benefit to having the logs other than a wider choice of mushrooms?

Glad I've seen this thread. I've been looking to see if I could grow mushrooms and they've got these kits on ebay for not too much money and wondered if they were worth a go.

Think I'll be going to purchase some now!

The logs will grow different species of mushrooms. Those kits come with a particular substrate innoculated with white or chestnut mushrooms, but shiitake's for example will not grow in the same substrate. They need wood, or sawdust to grow on.
The white/chestnuts are definitely some of the easiest, and the kits are great. With a bit of research, good yields of oysters are quite easy on straw and wood chip.
Good luck, hope they grow well for you.

At 50p/mushroom I hope they were the best/biggest mushrooms ever!! I've had a mushroom kit from Aldi before.. just rotted&stunk up my house but they were good about refunding my £3! Was seriously going to try the £1 ones but everyone says mushroom kits are a waste of money as the yield is low fun though I guess if they work!

I found that I had to fluff up my mix on the top everyday to make sure some mushrooms grow... I now have one good sided one and a few little spores going on...
When I had previously left it, the mix seemed to flatten down and gave nowhere for the mushrooms to grasp hold of...
One bag of mix I opened even had a mushroom growing in it already lol...
                      Gotta love poundworld...

Sorry I know this thread is old, but I'm currently growing button mushrooms using one of the pound shop grow kits.

Has anybody ever tried transplanting the mushroom substrate to their lawn before, once the mycelium has colonised itself? Is this at all viable?

On GQT yesterday, James Wong suggested growing mushrooms on old phone books (you can use loo rolls as well)
