  • Mould in propagator

Sowed my seeds the weekend before last. Kept the thermostat at 20*C. Opened then vents a tad. Some seeds have germinated beautifully. Some haven’t (yet!).

Around the base of two of my seedlings is a white fur like cotton wool. I’m guessing this is mould due to warm and damp conditions.

What can I do to rectify the situation? I’ve opened the vents fully now. Is this enough or should I remove the lid? Slightly concerned avout the jalapeno and GD tomato seeds that haven’t yet germinated.

I think it's probably the compost. I wouldn't worry about it. Make sure you aren't watering to much but as soon as you see any green, whip them out quick.

I wouldn't panic, hopefully everything will be fine. If the affected seedlings are in a tray with others which are OK, I'd think about moving the unaffected ones to fresh compost.

Most likely you got the compost a bit too wet before sowing the seeds - its a live and learn thing, I'm sorry to say.

I reckon the other seeds will germinate, though the temp may be a bit low for some chillis.

There's always a bit of mold in compost. It has a myriad of bacteria and fungi cohabiting your plant

          Confession time.

It wasn’t mould. Any ideas what it might’ve been?

Here’s a clue: only four seedlings were affected and they were sweetcorn

Yup the white stuff was the seed husk that was poking through the compost that gave it a fluffy or furry look. Which I realised only when i transplanted them into larger pots as they were too tall for the propagator.

That's useful for us to know because I might have thought the same if I'd seen it on mine. Thanks.
I work very hard so please don't expect me to think as well!
