  • Most suitable place to plant out purple sprouting broccoli?

    Hi,

My PSB plants are about 1.5ft high and getting too big for their pots.

It's my first time growing PSB and I'm not sure where the best place to plant them out are. The only space I have left are:

    1. Bed shaded by neighbour's tree most of the day but gets a small amount of direct sun
    2. A less shaded bed which doesn't get too much sun either but more than 1. As the plants grow they may shade the sugar snap peas currently growing behind them though
    3. Builder's bucket which I can put where ever I want

Or as a last resort 4, a sunnier bed currently occupied by lettuce and peas.

Which of the above would you all recommend?

Not number 3, any of the others.

Btw, 1 and a half feet tall! When did you sow them?

Please ignore everything I say, I make it up as I go along, not only do I generally not believe what I write, I never remember it either.

Thanks, Womble. So they can do well in the shade?

Yes! So I don't know what to do with them now! I sowed them quite early I think end Feb / early March (the earliest time it said on the packet) in a seed tray before moving them into pots which have been in the greenhouse since. Searching on the Vine, that seemed to be a lot earlier than everyone else.

I've grown them in semi shade all right. Like most things, I suspect they would be better in full sun, but I presume something has to go in the shade <shrugs shoulders> really only you can decide, because you are the only one who knows your garden and where you want to put things, you must have other things to go out, or be planted.

Yes, I have swiss chard, french beans and beetroot to go out and am just in the process of decided what to put where.

The semi-shaded spot is currently occupied by some beetroot that I planted out months ago but they are barely bigger than they were back then, so that doesn't seem to have worked. As you said, something has to go in the shade so I've decided this year, it'll be the PSB.

          Thanks for your advice!
