  • To manure or not to manure?!

So - I had a hugggeee delivery yesterday of 6yr old horse poo (mixed with some stray or hay). Now, I know I should have spread it around in the autumn but as with everything else on the lottie at the mo, I'm a tad behind. I've already discovered I can use it now on my raspberries (thanks to Capsid), and I know beans and peas will appreciate it, but should I not be spreading it liberally anywhere and everywhere I can find (other than carrot and parsnip bed) ?!!?d Will it do more harm than good at this time of year? I've never had access to any before so this is the first time I've ever used it ...

If it's 6 yrs old then it's gold dust! I'd dig it in everywhere except for carrots and parsnips as you say.

What Capsid said - and I'm only just putting my well rotted cow muck onto many of my beds, so you're in good company .

      Oh, and welcome back!

Can I just enquire to why not to put it on carrot and parsnip beds?

        Many Thanks.

The carrots/parsnips don't make long tap roots as they can easily derive water and nutrients from the manure. When the root reaches the compost/manure they just send out fibrous side roots.

At 6 year old it is well rotted and can be used liberally all over. I would even be using it in the carrot bed if it is well dug in but as others said hold back on the parsnips. Ideal for mulching all fruit beds.
