  • Lettuce Seeds

I have bought a pack of Iceberg Lettuce seeds which contain 500 seeds. I only want about 3 Lettuces so how many seeds should I sow? Also can you put in grow bags thanks.

What I do is sow a few (maybe 10) in a pot, then when they germinate choose the strongest ones to pot on into individual pots. I let the rest grow in the original pot and eat them as baby leaves in salads.

Lettuces will grow well in grow bags.

Lettuces will grow very much anywhere as long as they are not put in full sun!

And like "Lady P" over saw, prick out the strongest into individual pots to grow on and heart up if your wanting a full lettuce and use the rest picking off outer leaves as and when needed as a "Cut n come again"

        Makes sence to me really!

And I love little baby lettuce leaves garnishing my dinner time sandwich!

Also sow a pinch of lettuce seeds every month that way you'll have a continuous supply of lettuce.

I've cheated, well maybe not. Rather then probably scattering far more than I need, coz they are so tiny, I've prepared seed tapes - strips or bits of one layer of bog roll with the seeds glued to them, 3 per location. If all three fail to germinate I'll add some more, if they all do I'll only have two to remove for thinning.

I plan on sowing one location each of two types each week so that, in theory, I'll have two lettuces to harvest and eat each week - I doubt I could use more than that without getting bored of them.

When I was young I had an allotment.
The chap on the next plot always had a complete row of iceberg lettuce, must have sown the whole pack.
It was the width of his allotment.
              Most went to waste.

I re-use the containers you get with plug plants, 6 stations.
I sown about 3 seeds per station and thin down to 1.
