  • Lazy Gardening

I haven't been able to do any gardening for a week as I've had an operation and I'm only just at the 'limping about' stage. I can't lift anything heavy or do anything even vaguely strenuous.

Has anyone got any suggestions of really easy gardening jobs I can do?

I did manage to sneak outside today for a minute to have a quick gloat over all the seedlings in the cold frame before Paul dragged me back in to sit down with a cup of tea.

Any tips on making hard jobs less physically taxing would also be great for when I'm a bit more mobile...

    Thanks in advance!

Planning what you're going to sow as autumn crops! I always forget, so maybe now's opportune if you've time on your hands.

You could research some lovely veg recipes to make the most of your harvest.

Get Paul to do it all!!!!!

Perhaps some sowing of seed or some potting on may be in order. If you are really limited you can make seed envelopes to keep this years seed for next year in, or even make some plant labels for later use out of recycled plastic.

The pc can be put to good use to make detailed plans of your plot and or garden, with the location of permanent planting highlighted.

You can also join Paul when he brings us those eggs????

How's about putting those seed packets in sowing order. Trouble is, i still miss some of the veg, allway's thinking "I'll come back to that" and never do :0

Jeannine reorganises her seed boxes about three times a day

She's already thought of your first suggestion too PLW

Lots of good ideas though! From a selfish point of view I rather like Tracey's recipe one.

Sit down wiv a nice cuppa and make a lovely long list of all those job wot need doing, hand it to Paul, smile sweetly and tell him to get on wiv it!!! Only joking, how frustrating for you!
How about making some paper pots?

Obviously, your job at the moment is to follow Paul round, watching everything he does from a deck-chair, and telling him how exactly he should be doing it & which bits he's done wrong and/or missed... ("What did I say, Roy?")
                Hee hee Sorry Paul!
Seriously though, hope you're soon on the mend Jeannine, and whatever jobs you decide to do, only do them for a short spell before you change to something else. Then you're not putting too much strain on any one bit. After my last major op we went on holiday, & sitting in the car on the way there without enough breaks had me nearly crippled for 4 days out of the 7 we were away So you need a break even from sitting down!

I work on the basis that digging is as bad for the garden as it is for me. So I don't dig. Ever.
Hoe a bit, spread compost and don't dig.

Cheers for all the ideas guys, I especially like the ones that involve getting Paul to do the hard work!

He's very kindly set me up with loads of peat-free fibre pots on the dining room table so I've had just had a blissful half hour sitting here and pricking out seedlings. Just as well as I found loads of slug's eggs on one tray. Must be true about prevention being better than cure!

We've had a really good germination success rate this year, and I feel really guilty about throwing seedlings in the compost bin... if any Grapes in the Colchester area want any tomatoes, chillis, annual climbers, Cape gooseberries or early spring veg, please PM me and I'll put some aside!

Gosh, yes, I know what you mean
I have enough tomato plants to fill several greenhouses I've lined up a few friends who don't grow, but like to eat, to take them off my hands when they get a bit bigger!

LOL @ getting Paul to do all the hard work for the time being. What about doing a bit of "light" turning over of the soil? If you have a garden claw, it really makes light work of turning over the soil, especially if we've had a wet spell.

It's the idea that it's 'just for the time being' that makes me laugh
