  • Latest to sow chillies

    Hello,

I this is my first post here although I have been browsing for a bit.

Just wondered what is the latest you all sow your chilli seeds and manage to get a decent amount of chillies from them.

Usually grow quite a few and sow feb, just I am being posted out to iraq then.
Am back very end april, I think this may be pushing it a bit late?

    Thanks

    Sue

    Hi SLP

Whereabouts are you? If you pop your location into your profile, it helps immensely.

I'd think the further south you are, the better your chances - and if you have a greenhouse then that ups them even more.

What about germinating some and hardening them off as soon as they germinate, and leaving outdoors somewhere sheltered whilst you are away? There is a small chance that they will survive, and if they don't - you can sow again when you get back.

Depends on the variety too, some crop quicker than others so if you go for the faster ones then you should still be OK, especially if you're growing them on in a greenhouse.

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

what types are you thinking of growing? some garden centres will still be selling small plants of the usual suspects like Apache when you get back (no need to plantyour own then) for instance there is one centre near Bagshot, which sells other types such as Paper Lantern and Big Banana as well.

You can sow them in January, but they'll be sizeable plants by April ~ is there nobody who can water them for you while you're away?

Just wanted to say thanks for the advice above as i'm off out next week.

Decided in the end to take your advice and order a few packs of chillis from plantsbypost, have seen them about on here and they have decent selection at ok prices - least i know dad's not going to kill em off!!!!!!!!

May try sowing some of my own when I get back and see if they come to anything.
