  • late peas

I am keen to plant a late row of peas (2nd week in July) to be started off in pots. I have had very poor germination when directly sown into the ground.
What is the best variety to use for this late sowing?

    Hi Suem

I wouldn't be the best person to answer this question as this is only my 2nd year growing peas, but what I can tell you is that I sowed a second batch of 'Hurst Green' peas about 3 weeks ago in pots and they're doing really well. The plants germinated very quickly (compared to when I sowed them originally at the start of the year), and they're very healthy and strong right now.

I'm sure others on the forum can give you much better advice, but my 2p's worth is that the Hurst Green seem to be doing very well!

    All the best!

I planted some Jaguar about 4 weeks ago and only two out of the fourteen seeds have germinated. Most annoying, especially as I'm sure I'd read they were a late sowing variety.

You're all doing better than me at any rate. I've sowed 2 lots so far none of which germinated. shoved the last handful into some seed trays last week and I think maybe one or two have rooted but no shoots yet. It's not the seed either cos a friend sowed exactly the same ( we split the pack) but a little earlier and hers grew just fine.
Must have been the hot hot weather we had recently I think.

It was Jaguar pea seeds that also failed to germinate for me on this occasion.

For a late sowing it should be a first early wrinkled variety like Kelvedon Wonder or Early Onward. Welcome on board Suem

Douce Provence are a good un as well, but any of the earlies will be OK as they will mature before the winter comes.

I wouldn't mind as I know there are bound to be some failures in the garden but these were part of a pack of seeds advertised on the GYO site as suitable for sowing late

I also sent for those Jaguar pea seeds but haven't had time to try mine yet. Will plant another row of my usual Onward at same time though just incase! Hmmm

Jaguar are normally good for sowings right through June, so you should still have some success if you get them in quick. Good idea to double-up though.

Doggler, how did you sow yours? Could be the hot weather as Pickledtink suggests, or mice - I've seen lots this summer. I guess the warm evenings are having an effect on their numbers too...

I planted them in an old recycling box. Didn't do anything different to all my other container veg. I think it's just one of those things.
