  • Large tomato crisis!

I have been watching with pride and anticipation as the largest tomato in the world (well, slight exaggeration, praps) developed in my greenhouse. We were looking forward to stuffing it, and waiting patiently for it to ripen. However, it hasn't ripened yet, and has started to go all soft and rotten around the stem, spreading down the fruit! What has happened? I've never had this problem before. The other fruit on the vines are fine. What should I do?

Sounds like it could be blossom end rot (google for pictures)...not good news really, sorry.

      Hi Sweetcorn,

My tomatoes were all gone, blighted. It starts with a patch of stem turning brown ( later on, not just browned but also soften the stem and form some sort of mucous) and it spread to the fruit, turning it brownish, then soften and rot.
I hope I am wrong ! but if it is really "blight" , you have to destroy the infected plant to prevent further spreding to your other tomato plant or your potatoes plant ( if you have any ). Burn the infected plant and remove all the infected parts ( to prevent the fungus overwintering and reattact next year )
      all the best,
      Momol

It's not blossom end rot - that is at the bottom of the fruit and it's a hard black patch. Sounds more like botrytis (grey mould). I've had a real problem with it this year in the greenhouse. If the fruit is infected it will be no good so get rit of it. Also check over your plants and look for any brown patches on the stems. If you find them cut back to healthy green growth. Any fruit above such patches can be cut green and taken indoors to ripen. However, you will need to keep an eye on them to make sure they don't start to rot. A good alternative is green tomato chutney - I made pounds of it last weekend!!!

Hmmm, it does sound like Botrytis. Thanks for your advice, folks. Will have to keep an eagle eye out for any more ....
