  • Keeping onion bulbs for later in the year/ next year?

    Hi there,
my partner had ordered 3 kgs of onion sets, not realising how much that is, and now that we have planted everything we have plenty left over.
Does anyone know if we can keep them for next year, or will they be wasted?
I wouldn't mind giving them away, but I'm still wondering if we could just put them in the cellar and plant next year... Or plant out later in the summer when the potatoes have come out???
    Thanks,
    Mia

I wouldn't even try to keep them. They are stored by suppliers in precise conditions, and I've found odd ones in my shed that I've missed or have fallen out of the bag, and they've dried up to nothing.
Try asking your fellow plot holders if they want any, or freecycle them.

I noticed yesterday the garden centre we visited were still selling onion sets. Would there be any point in planting them this late?

You could try planting them out in a smaller space than usual Mia, if you have any odd bits of spare ground - they won't get so big but could be used for baby onions/pickling ?
