Our neighbour found them a few weeks later on a hoard in his soil...most likely rats or squirrels?

Sounds a bit odd. Just to double check, you have dug deep enough? They can be a good foot underground.

They do on dogs - I've tested it - both raw and uncooked

I've also tested them with cooked and boiled JAs - same result

Have you tested them with roasted and cooked in the oven as well ...........
