  • How many of you grow...

How many of you grow Sunflowers inbetween Cucumbers and Marigolds inbetween Tomatoes? I do, I've done it every year for the last 3 or 4 years. I'm wondering who doesn't bother and if there's any difference? Any opinions appreciated.

Didn't know about sunflowers and cucumbers combination . Have grown marigolds with toms, the battle has been with the slugs , always looks good and must do the job .

Never heard of the sunflower thing (my cucs taste great they way they are) but always grow marigolds with my toms (not sure if it makes a real difference but they look lovely and it's something my grandad always did and it reminds me of visiting him as a kid ). Do grow sunflowers outside, partially ornamental and partially for the seeds.

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

I tried growing marigolds with the toms in the greenhouse border, but the sluggies ate them. I rescued the last few sorry survivors and put them in pots on the staging instead, and they were fine there. Don't know if they were responsible, but I never had any problems with insects or disease in the greenhouse all summer; the only thing I got was blight towards the end of the season.

Didn't know about sunflowers and cucs... I have some dwarf SF seeds, so that might be fun to try!

Yep, me too with marigolds, but I dot them all over the place, not just with the tomatoes. Never had much success with cucumber, so gave up last year, but I always sow some sunflowers just for the pleasure of them.

I'd not heard about sunflowers in between cukes but as I grow mine outside against trellis or some other kind of support I think I'll have a go this year... if nowt else it will look lovely!

No I have not done either of those - I've grown basil between toms before, in a vain effort to stop whitefly....
Thanks for the tip - I might give it ago

I always grow tagetes type marigolds ( I read it had to be those) so I don't get aphids in the greenhouse, and it does work
last year the slugs ate them for the first time, but then slugs ate everything last year

I grow various sorts of marigolds dotted all round the veg garden, just bunging the plants in where there is a gap. So not very scientific.

I too, have never heard the sunflower thing and am a little sceptical as to how proximity can effect flavour. But I'm always open minded.

Sunflowers get grown for the birds - its the marsh tits who go nuts for them here.

I grow marigolds all over the place - well, they grow themselves as I let them set seed everywhere. If I need the space I just pull it or move it.

Ditto sunflowers. But you can't really move them as the tap root is so deep.
