How many plants in a pot? And what size pot?

Hi Rossa - I start them all out in small modular trays and then as the plants show roots through the bottom I pot on to a bit bigger, then a bit bigger and so on up to the flower buckets. My toms and courgettes are in flower buckets, but I put some grass clippings and polystyrine chips in the bottom (or bottle tops, newspaper, anything I can find really) which means you use less compost. Not sure about the brassicas, I would imagine as with other things, one per pot.

Question is how many plants do you put in one pot and how big should the pot be?

I've got a range of sizes including about 28 Morrisons 10" ex-flower buckets. Am using these for toms, corn and cukes but not grown brassicas in pots before.

Just wondering if I need to use such big pots for some veg as they do use up quite a bit of compost. And think I saw Mr TK say on one post that he grows his toms in 5" pots which made me think about this.

What size pots do you use and how many plants in each one?

I think that I might have said 'transplanted into 5" pots before being transplanted' again.
For your toms and cucumbers, your 10" pots, one per plant. Brassicas, I am not sure about, but I am sure someone will advise. I would also fill your pots completly with compost, because you will need as much reserve as possible when growing in pots.

These are RHS recommendations from my course material:
Toms pots at least 10 - 12" deep, 10" wide, strong and stable to support growth.
Others in pots this size or smaller.
Corn - 5 mini corn in a 16" pot.
Cukes - as tomatoes I should imagine
Calabrese - annual variety. I thought these needed to be firm in the ground to flower well, I am interested have you tried them in pots before?

Crocks in the bottom and a 5cm mulch or plastic to stop the pots drying out so much is recommended. I grow apple trees in large containers and they dry out quite a bit

Thanks Mr TK, that makes sense. Mine have been transplanted from 5" to the 10" already though compared to someone on here who's plants are already 7' tall mine are midgets at 3'.

FF, I'm using Alpaca manure at the bottom of the pots mixed with straw/hay from an organic farm then compost on top. So far so good everything's looking ok. Most of the greedy plants like courgettes are getting Alpaca mixed in with the compost. My spuds seem to love it too as I have forest of potato plants growing, much bigger and better then last year. Guess the proof will be in the harvesting and eating.

Adrastea, I've not grown brassicas in pots before. Thought I'd try an annual variety in pots this year as the slower growing PSB will be going in the ground after my spuds. Haven't got enough room for the annual variety to go in the ground as I'm only growing at home and space is limited.

I have the same problem! Space is very limited and it's hard when you want to grow things that you just can't find room for. Good luck with the PSB and let us know how it turns out

Like you, I am running out of space so have just potted up 18 beetroot into 3" pots and am gonna leave them to see how they do as I have plenty in the ground so it will be an interesting comparison. I don't hold out much hope as they may need more room for the roots.
