  • help: my sprouts stink

So, I've been getting into sprouting seeds. I've done it before in a jar and it was fine.

Now that I've bought a super-duper square one, I'm having problems.

    1) even though I rinse twice a day, the sprouts stink, and some of them are slimy. I make sure to drain the box thoroughly, upside down with a sieve. Today the whole lot went in the compost because they smelled like vomit.

    2) every now and again, we crunch down on a really hard sprout (well, one that hasn't sprouted). Usually mung beans

I'm about to give up, unless someone can give me any top tips; please!

Hum, I'm at a loss as to why that's happening

As you know I use the square sprouters, I have 6 standing in a stack, I honestly have never had slimy sprouts in all the time I have been doing it

Don't give up - must be an easy explanation for it!

Sometimes it seems to happen. The last time I tried sprouting some mustard seeds I had the same problem. I suspect it was because the seeds were a bit old. The smell was truly awful!

Just a thought - do you soak them overnight, then refresh them, then start the process of sprouting from there?

I'm sure you do, but just trying to see why it's happening.

Mrs P says alfalfa normally the quickest to go smelly even rinsing 2ce a day.... says she has more success with mung and chickpeas but not to put too many in ...ie literally a single layer.

I don't sprout alfalfa at all. The mung are the hard ones that break your teeth (obviously very old seed). The vomit smell was coming off chickpeas (my own seed that I grew summer 09)
