  • Help identify two bushes and something orange

    Hi all,
I went to the allotment today with high hopes that I could remove some carpet and start spreading the love, I mean mulch to prep the first real bed

It took me an hour to remove two pieces of carpet, because one was entirely surrounding a poor tree, also surrounded by a tyre, and the other had a raised bed on top of it. There was also a plastic mat under the woodchip next to the shed. Then more plastic... jeez.

Anyhow, in the little raised bed there's something distinctly orange, with an orangey smell to it. Any idea what that is?

And in another little bed next to it, there are two quite woody looking bushes, but low growing... Any idea what they could be? Sorry about the poor quality picture...

Could the first one be an iris and the 2nd be asparagus fern? Can't really tell from the photo whether its stiff or floppy, if you know what I mean.

Oh really? I thought it was sweet potato but couldn't be sure since it's been growing in such cramped conditions.

The two little bushes are woody, not at all floppy, but surrounded with grass which makes the photo so difficult. I will try again once I've got some mulch on them.
        Thank you

          Blueberries maybe?
Scrap that idea - doesn't looked branched enough.
Could be anything really - need leaves!

Is the tuber rhubarb? The died back bit looks like a rhubarb plant.

Agree the orange could be rhubarb. Lots of long orange carrot-like roots which break up easily.

No idea what the bush is, sorry. Need leaves

I have no idea but dig them up and plant in a part of the plot where they can grow for a season till you can tell what you have got

                Could the bush be gooseberry?

Thanks guys, I didn't know rhubarb had roots like that. Plenty of that then - there's three in there. I will rescue them from their prisons and see what happens in the spring

And yes, I think you have a good point there - they could be goosegogs!

Yeah I think that's it They couldn't go deep cause they'd laid plastic and carpet under the raised bed, so the roots aren't long. I will replant them all
                        Thank you!

Apparently you can use rhubarb roots as a hair dye.
