    Growing Tomatoes Outdoors

    I'm growing three sorts of tomatoes this year: Gardeners Delight, Yellow Pear and Brandywine, but I've only got limited space in my makeshift greenhouse, so I'm thinking of attempting to grow some outside but don't have much info on outside tomatoes.

    When will be the best time to plant them out? (I'm in the South) Should I hold them inside for as long as possible or will they be safe outside earlier? Can they be planted out now?

    Would it be better to have some varieties inside and some outside or have a few plants of each indoors and a few outdoors (I wouldn't mind seeing how differently they do/taste)?

    Any other tips?

    Hello Sage and welcome to the Vine.
    I am also growing Gardeners's Delight, Yellow and Red Tumblers. They are all outside as I have limited space. So far so good they are growing ok. A couple have flower buds already

      I've got some Gardeners Delight, San Marzano, Incas F1 and Big Boy varieties and am hoping to plant some in my greenhouse, but also some outside.

      Partly as an experiment to see if the plants develop differently, but mainly as I haven't got room in the greenhouse for all those tomatoes and peppers and cucumbers!

      Apparantly it's still possible we could have frost fr a few more weeks, so maybe hold off for a couple of weeks until planting outside?

        I am growing Gardeners Delight, Beefsteak and some unknown variety (a couple plants giving to me) all outside.

        They have been outside for 3 weeks now with no trouble, I am located deep in the South West in Plymouth though and I have my fleece ready incase of frost.

          We have planted out legend, Mr Stripy and ruby and all seem to be doing well. All are showing flower buds and 1 has flowers opening. We also have some gardners delight and matts which are too small yet to go outside. We have a small garden and are trying to cram in as much as we can, luckily it is fairly sheltered and a real sun trap so I am hoping for a reasonable crop.

          Will let you know how we get on.

            Thanks for the help. I'll plant them out once their bed is ready, which will probably be Monday and keep my fingers crossed there's no frost. I have some fleece just in case - I think I'll harden them off with it anyway. I'll let you know how they do and if there's any difference compared with the ones in the greenhouse.

              don't know about the last two but Gardeners Delight will certainly grow outside.
