    Growing beans in pots?

    Last year we had the great HeyWayne Chili-Off at work, and it proved a bit of a success (just in our dept), so I said I'd do it again this year, only grow something different.

    Donated by one of our kindest and shekshyest grapes are some bean seeds.

    I decided on beans as they're relatively easy to grow, take up little floor space and can be grown outside (all prerequisites of the entrants).

    Only one possible dilemma. One of the entrants is hopefully moving house soon - so asked if she can move it. I suggested she can grow them in a pot (albeit a deep one probably) and then plant it/them out when she moves.

    I'm right, right?

    Well, haxn*cks sell those bean growing bags that come with the frame to support them, so I'd assume so, yep! I hope so too, as I'm planning on doing the same.

      Are we talking runner beans? I grow my runner beans in tubs on the patio every year and they do brilliantly. If she had a big enough tub I'm sure she could just move the tub to her new house and they'd carry on growing there. I may be wrong though.

        BTW - I'm growing Sutton beans (dwarf broadies) in a flower bucket that's on top of a builders bucket, but has the bottom cut out. Sorta thing. Just as a test, we'll see if it works. I've put stone chippings as a mulch to help keep the moisture in too.

          Yes, I have dwarf beans (Hestia's) growing in a trough, not even that deep, so fingers crossed they survive but looking pretty good so far.

          Also planning on growing some climbing french beans in a half barrel.

            I've grown dwarf and runner beans in pots for years they do really well, this year is the first year I'm growing them in the ground on my lottie (only had it for 5 weeks) looking good so far

              Yup Wayne - they can be. Just get her to dig a hole the same size as the bucket when she moves and drop the whole root ball in.

              Incidentally; they will grow to about 8ft; so they need canes or something to grow up.

                Speaking of which, it finally clicked about your description on how you grow your beans zaz! I read your blog, made the connection with the other forum - wow looks cool!

                Can't wait to be able to do that if I can get an allotment! [do you grow anything underneath btw]

                    I grow mine over an arch with big square tin pot's at ether side have done for the last 6 years and they grow like mad. It also frames the gate really well it look's mighty impressive when ya first enter mi garden .

                      Yes. This year in one bed I have loads of onions and some dwarf beans and some beetroot.

                      Haven't even sown the next bed yet.....but rest assured it will be full underneath.

                        On Gardeners World the other day they started growing them in an old gutter and then planted them out in the garden by making a trench and sliding the contents of the guttering into it. It was quite cool.
