  • Grafted Cucumber failure - options?

Mygrafted cucumber has finally given up, after the cold start it really didn't like. Fruits and flowers shrivelled before setting and now covered in aphids and no new growth.

Ideally I'd like to replace it, but doesn't seem to be any stock locally. In our northerly climes, a grafted plant in our back yard seemed to do well last year and kept up with our little-and-often cucumber requirements!

Any bright ideas? Try sowing an ordinary one - too late? Can I do anything to shock the existing one back to life? I'd hate to have to buy tasteless cucs all summer...

    Thank you!

Quick look at a June sowing list (Moreveg) and it says Cucumber on it.
I am guessing that you would have to get the right variety and get sowing fast for any crop result. It is well into June after all.

I equally guess (actually not a clue) that it would be one of the smaller varieties, just easier/quicker for the plant to produce a small cucumber as opposed to a large one.

If the top 6 inch of the plant are OK cut it of and put it in a milk bottle full of water. Keep the bottle top up every day in about a week you will see roots growing, wait until you have plenty of root and pot it up in moist compost.

Here's one I prepared earlier well a couple of years ago when I had a disaster. From cut the top of to the plant in the pot took about 20 days.

If you have an aldi nearby, they may have some mini cucumber plants left from the promotion last Thursday:

          https://www.aldi.co.uk/en/specialbuy...15-06-15_18-37

Established plant in a 4 litre pot for £2.99. They had loads left in my local aldi yesterday.

Great ideas, thanks guys. I didn't see any in Aldi at the weekend, so I'll try both sowing and the cutting the top off method suggested by potstubsdustbins - thank you all!
